While they were braving the elements last month in Newport, the more than 2,000 runners who participated in the Amica Marathon and UnitedHealthcare Half-Marathon helped raise nearly $12,000 for the Providence Ronald McDonald House, according to Amica Insurance and Eident Sports Marketing.

The proceeds will help benefit the nonprofit organization, which for the past two decades has served as a temporary home to more than 5,000 families whose children received medical care for premature birth, serious injury, illness or surgery at area hospitals.

"We are extremely grateful for support from the Amica Marathon," Michael Fantom, Chief Executive Officer of the Ronald McDonald House of Providence, said in a statement released by Eident Sports Marketing. "Our programs allow families to spend additional time with a sick child, help ease financial burdens, provide a sense of normalcy and keep families together during times of medical crisis. The funds provided from the Amica Marathon will help us to continue to reach that goal."
