BY CAROLYN THORNTON They were honored as two of "New England's Finest" runners, then took the starting line and demonstrated why they are both so deserving of the title. Former Providence College star Pat Moulton successfully defended his crown at the 16th annual ING Hartford Marathon last Saturday, winning the Conn. race in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 22 seconds. Because he was once again recognized within the New England's Finest Elite Program, the 27-year-old - who adds this win to his 2009 victory at the SunTrust National Marathon, last March in Washington, D.C. - saw his prize money doubled to $6,000. Meanwhile, Pat Tarpy - a former Ivy League 10,000-meter champion when he competed at Brown University and a 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in the 5,000 meters - handily won the accompanying ING Hartford Half-Marathon with a time of 1:04:43. The 27-year-old, who was named the 2009 King of the Roads by New England Runner magazine, received $2,000 for his winning effort. There was also a Rhode Island presence on the women's side with Tara Cardi, 40, of East Greenwich placing third in the marathon in 2:53:31. Recognized as a Regional Championship by Road Runner's Club of America, the event celebrated its first year as the "Greenest Road Race in America" and featured more than 10,000 participants in the marathon, half-marathon and 5K races.
