Providence, RI - Close to 4,000 runners will be part of the next wave at the 2009 Amica Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Newport, RI. Runners - ranging in age from 10 to 80 - are coming from as far away as Belgium to participate in the event, which includes the Amica Marathon, UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon and a marathon team relay.

Rhode Island's legendary race directors Charlie Breagy, Dan Gough and Bob Rothenberg have teamed up to lead the 2009 Amica Marathon. Together, the trio has more than 50 years of experience directing major running events in the Ocean State.

"With the Amica Marathon, UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon and a team relay, this event offers something for everyone," said Breagy. "We have a variety of participants, including experienced runners, first time marathoners and those who want to run a shorter distance and be part of a team. The course is beautiful. We can expect a great event on Sunday."

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. Sunday in downtown Newport, with a course that runs alongside Newport harbor, past picturesque Ocean Drive and through historic Bellevue Avenue. The second half of the 26.2-mile course runs along the Sakonnet River and ends at scenic Easton's Beach.
