Race organizers provide this recap of the inaugural Run for the Island 5K in Middletown: Bishop Geralyn Wolf Fires Starting Gun at St. Columba's Chapel 5K Run/Walk to Benefit Aquidneck Island Charities MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - St. Columba's Chapel, of Middletown, R.I., organized it's first "Run for the Island", a 5K Race/Walk to benefit Aquidneck Island charitable organizations. The 5K (3.1 mile) run/walk event, officially measured by Ray Nelson, took place on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 9:00 a.m., with Bishop Geralyn Wolf firing the starting gun. The course took the runners and walkers along Indian Avenue and the Sakonnet River. All proceeds from the run will assist a number of local community non-profit organizations, including: Child & Family Services of Newport County; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center; Lucy's Hearth; McKinney Shelter; Seaman's Church Institute; StarKids Scholarship Program; and Women's Resource Center. Following the race, refreshments were served and people lingered to enjoy the comradeship on the beautiful chapel grounds. Awards were given to the top three male and female finishers overall: Jacob Edwards - 18:34, Dan Sullivan - 19:53, and Joel Cohen - 20:06. Mimi Dowd - 20.01, Julie Richer - 22:36, and Ellie Murphy - 22:53. First and second male and female finisher in each age division also received medals. All the winners, as well as sponsors and volunteers, will be posted on the St. Columba's Chapel website at www.stcolumbaschapel.org Timing and scoring for the " 5K Run for the Island' was provided by +ORGANIZATION PLUS+ Road Race Management Services. |
