At the first Downtown 5K 20 years ago, there were four male runners to every one female.

Ten years later, women accounted for approximately 44 percent of the field at the Providence race.

At this morning's CVS Caremark Downtown 5K - another 10 years later - that number had jumped to 55 percent.

"The Downtown 5K women's growth is absolutely reflective of what we're seeing on a national level," said Ryan Lamppa, Running USA media director. "The increase of females in U.S. road running events surged from 21 percent in 1987 to approximately 50 percent in 2007 and 2008."

"What is even more interesting," he added, "is the fact that the absolute total number of women race finishers over the last 20 years grew from just over 791,000 female finishers in 1987 to nearly 4.4 million in 2007 - a five-fold plus increase!"
