The Red Rooster Ramble celebrated its 200th run on Aug. 6.

Now in its 11th year, the Thursday night series hosted by the Rhode Island Road Runners begins in March and runs for 24 weeks with runners and walkers setting out from the Market Street Pub at 99 Market St. in Warren and following a fairly flat 5-mile route to Barrington and back.

The event - which will hold its final two runs today and Sept. 3, with walkers starting at 6 p.m. and runners heading out at 6:30 - has grown from a dozen runners each week to more than 60, says organizer Dave Simmons.

"I am simply amazed as to how much the series has grown in popularity, especially in the past year," he said. "I can remember ordering one or two pizzas a week at the pub after every race. Now, I am ordering at least 10 pizzas and filling Market Street Pub every Thursday evening."

A $5 registration fee each week covers the cost of the run, as well as the post-run pizza parties. One-third of those entry fees will go toward a cash raffle held at the end-of-the year awards ceremony, which will take place Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Warren Soccer Club, located at 132 Child St. in Warren - one block south and one block east of the Market Street Pub. Simmons says he had to move the venue for this year's gathering to accommodate the anticipated turnout.

"As in the past, I encourage people to feel free to bring a salad or a desert to share," he said, adding that those planning to attend should notify him by the Sept. 3 run so he can plan accordingly.
