Photographer George Ross captured hundreds of images at Saturday's Race for Grace - 5K Strollathon in Narragansett. Click here to see his slideshow. Click here to view more photos on Ross' web site. "All proceeds from photo sales," says Ross, "will go to the Race for Grace," which raises funds for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation . Grace Reddington, for whom the strollathon is named, is a 4-year-old from Narragansett who suffers from the neurological disorder. A seemingly normal child when she was born, she began regressing when she was 18 months old and was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in November of 2006. Caused by a faulty gene, the rare disease is seen almost exclusively in females, affecting 1 in every 10,000 to 15,000 girls. Accompanied by seizures, it progresses through four stages, causing severe problems with sleeping, breathing, swallowing, digestion, heart rate and motor function and ultimately leaving its victims profoundly disabled. |
