Despite racing for the first time in about six months, Chris Magill successfully defended his 5K crown at the Cox Providence Rhode Races, clocking a winning time of 16:37. "I'm just trying to get back into it again," said the former St. Raphael Academy and Iona College standout. "As you guys know, it's tough with family and traveling with work, but coming back to a place where you're familiar and you won last year gives you a little bit of a sense of confidence. The atmosphere in Providence is something that attracted me, too.
"I thought (the race) might attract some other (elite) runners today, but I was about on my own from about a half mile to the finish," Magill added. "So it was challenging to try and push yourself. But when you get to be 36 years old, a win's always nice no matter what time you run it in." Eighteen-year-old Henry Mattingly, of Chicago, was the men's runner-up in 18:21. Diana Davis - a 2007 graduate of Williams College now attending graduate school at Brown University - took first among the women with a time of 19:08. Kristen Kemp, 41, of Cranston followed in second in 20:04. |
