5K RUN/WALK SET FOR MARCH 28TH AT NAYATT ELEMENTARY

Third Annual Run/Walk Raises Funds for School and
Offers Cash Prizes for Top Runners

BARRINGTON, Rhode Island - The third annual Nayatt School 5K Run/Walk (Nayatt School 5K) is set for Saturday, March 28th. Besides the main run, two races are offered for children under 12 years of age: a one-mile timed run for children under 12 years of age; and Fun Run for school-aged children 7 years and under. Hosted by the Nayatt School Parent Teachers Organization (PTO), the Nayatt School 5K is open to the public.

This year cash prizes will be awarded to top runners. First-place finishers in each category will win $50 - plus a $50 bonus to the top overall male and female. Second-place runners will receive a $25 gift card or cash. Last year's event drew more than 400 runners aged 4 to 82. Post event festivities include runners' raffle, music/DJ, refreshments, professional booths, and even a few surprises. All Kids Fun Run participants will receive a prize.

"The Nayatt 5K is definitely a highlight of the school year for the entire community," notes race organizer Maura Contrata. "The races draw all family members, from kindergarteners to grandparents. It is a fun time for families to do something healthy together and the school benefits from the funds raised."

Last year's race incorporated a sneaker recycling program as part of the Nayatt community's Green Initiative. More than 100 pairs of athletic shoes were collected and recycled through the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program. The program continues this year, so runners and spectators are encouraged to donate used athletic shoes (no cleats). Condition of shoes does not matter as materials will be ground into a rubber material that will be used for sports surfaces like playgrounds, running tracks, as well as tennis and basketball courts.

Pre-event registration is $18 (register online at www.needtorace.com). Event-day registration is $20 and opens at 7:15 a.m. The Nayatt School 5K starts promptly at 10 a.m. All participants who register by March 20 will receive a Nayatt School 5K T-shirt. Entrance fee for children's races is $12 pre-registration (with T-shirt) and $15 (with T-shirt) race day or $5 (no T-shirt). Proceeds benefit the Nayatt Elementary School PTO. For more information or to view a course map go to www.nayatt5k.net.

The Nayatt School 5K course is USATF sanctioned and certified. It is a fast, flat course that winds its way through Nayatt neighborhoods and features a waterfront jaunt on Mathewson Road. Fitness Together, a Barrington-based personal training gym, is setting up stretching stations before the race. Race is certified by Ray Nelson and timing calculated by Organization Plus. For the safety of all runners, strollers, rollerblades, dogs, and headphones are prohibited from the racecourse.

Nayatt Elementary School is offering a training program through the PTO after school enrichment program for its students after school during March. The children will be learning about race preparation, training techniques, and proper nutrition to fuel up for the race.

Since its inception, Reuse-A-Shoe has been responsible for recycling more than 20 million pairs of athletic shoes and created more than 250 sports surfaces.
