Race director Milt Schumacher provides details of the second annual Run Around the Reservoir 15K run/relay walk for hunger, slated for March 28, to benefit the Trinity Outreach Food Closet:

Run Around the Reservoir Again

If you missed it last year, don't fret. This event is destined to become one of northern RI's favorites. No one will challenge the claim that the course has as much to offer the recreational or competitive runner as any other in little Rhody, with its access to the sacred grounds of the Providence Water Reservoir, the sleepy village of North Scituate, and nature lovers favorites like the Bald Eagle nesting site visible from rte. 116. The cause? A worthy venture that provides overstuffed bags of groceries to more than 60 families every month (does anyone think that number will go down in these uncertain times?). The hospitality - many of the same volunteers who man the food closet are ready to treat you to a first class post race refreshment party with soup, bread, awards, and raffle picks while you get down from that racing high.

New this year is a simultaneous start for the walkers at the back of the start pack. And - a shorter trek of 8K which takes the walkers deep into the reservoir fire road and back to the finish (at Trinity Church) before the runners have ravaged all of the available refreshments. Also new is adoption of a limit on entries to the first 300 applicants. In future years we will evaluate whether or not we can manage a larger number or not if the demand continues to grow. The message here is: don't wait until race day to make up your mind - we may not be able to accommodate you. If we have to "close registration", notices will be posted on these websites: www.rirr.org, www.trinityepiscopalonline.org, and www.needtorace.com (the online registration site).

Again, if you missed it last year, take this chance to experience a beautiful but challenging 15K run (9.3 miles or 4.97 if you choose the 8K walk). And, while you're registering, feel free to add a few extra bucks just for the food closet or bring a few items of non-perishable goods for the cause. If you have questions (or perhaps you would rather volunteer to help on race day) you can call or email me: (401) 647 3905 miltschumacher@hotmail.com
