Runners and walkers won't have to wait until September to take another jaunt through the streets of downtown Providence. Charlie Breagy, race director for the CVS/Caremark Downtown 5K, has another event in the works - the St. Pat's 5k Run & Walk. "We are now at 1,000 registered," said Breagy. "Looks like we are on record pace for another major race in Providence." The 3.1-miler, set for March 21, will kick off at 11:30 a.m., beginning and ending at the State House on Smith Street. The race, which will precede the Providence St. Patrick's Day Parade, will benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the Brown Kenya Program. It will feature a team competition with family, pub and corporate categories. More details are below or by logging on to www.stpats5k.com. COURSE INFO: The race will start next to the Rhode Island State House on Smith Street in Providence. The route will then proceed West on Smith Street (route 44). The route will turn left onto Arbor Drive. Then take a right on Wyndham Ave. Take a right onto Smith Street and proceed East on Smith Street back to the Rhode Island State House. ABOUT THE CHARITIES: The Brown Kenya Program began in 1996 and Brown has been an integral part of the ASSANTE Consortium. Brown faculty, residents and medical students do 1-2 month rotations staffing the wards and teaching at the medical school during 2 dedicated months yearly and on an ongoing basis. Brown also hosts Kenyan medical students, physicians and public health professionals for advanced training. In addition to the exchange, Brown is involved in research programs and public health disease identification, treatment and control efforts including the development of AMPATH, the largest HIV care program in East Africa. Many program participants are actively engaged in the provision of medical supplies, programmatic support and significant philanthropic contributions.
