A 5-MILE SUMMER CLASSIC IN MEMORY OF RHODE ISLAND'S BELOVED MARATHONER

Narragansett, RI, June 16rh -- On August 16th the inaugural Bobby Doyle Summer Classic will kick off from Narragansett Middle School at 5pm. Runners and walkers will race along a 5-mile USATF course.

The race is to honor the memory of Rhode Island's own "Marathon Man" Bobby Doyle, and to continue his tradition of community service. Doyle won the Ocean State Marathon seven times all the while serving his community as track and field coach at many local high schools. As a runner, coach and citizen, Bobby believed that helping others in the community was one of the worthiest endeavors a person could pursue. The Bobby Doyle Summer Classic Road Race will continue to build on Bobby Doyle's community efforts and endeavors. All proceeds of the race will be donated in his memory.

The benefactors of the race include The Bobby Doyle Scholarships; two scholarships awarded to a male and a female Rhode Island high school runner who both display great morals and values in the classroom and community, and are dedicated to the sport of running. The race will also support The Bobby Doyle Youth Running Fund, specifically aimed to benefit local High School Track and Field programs. Lastly, the race creates the building blocks for the Bobby Doyle Cardiac Awareness Endowment Fund. This fund will be used to educate and raise awareness about the prevention of heart disease through a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise program to all Rhode Island residents. Once the fund is established, it will support lectures, screenings and other public awareness activities around the state for years to come.

The race is open to runners and walkers. Entrants can sign up on www.needtorace.com for a fee of $18 or can sign up day of the race for $20. More information about the race is available on the website listed above. The race will feature a "King and Queen of the Road" challenge to high school students. The top male and female high school finisher will be awarded this prestigious title and will win merchandise and gift certificates. Runners in other age categories also have the opportunity to win merchandise prizes.
