Tom Bobrowski sends along this information about a new race being planned in Cumberland:

On October 14, 2007 we will be hosting the 1st Annual Fragile X 5K Run / Walk at Tucker Field (across from Cumberland High School). All proceeds from this event will go to FRAXA, The National Fragile X Research Foundation. FRAXA continues to fund promising research toward improving the lives of those with Fragile X.

Fragile X is the leading cause of inherited mental impairment and the only known cause of Autism. This spectrum disorder can cause behavioral problems including extreme anxiety and hyperactivity, learning disabilities, even severe mental retardation. It affects 1 in 3600 boys and 1 in 4000 girls. One in 250 women is a carrier. To find out more about Fragile X please visit www.fraxa.org.

My wife, Leslie and I have six year old boy/ girl twins, both of who have Fragile X Syndrome. We have started the The Fragile X Families of Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts, a group of seven families all with children with Fragile X. We are certain there are children out there who continue to go undiagnosed.

To learn more about our race you can visit www.fragilex5k.org.

Thank you for posting this! My son has Fragile X Syndrome. This is a great cause. I hope to see all of you at the Run/Walk on Sunday
