A Rhode Islander has once again been chosen to head the New England 65+ Runners Club. Florence Dagata, of Pawtucket, the first Rhode Islander to serve from 2000 to 2003, provides this release on the appointment of Fred Zuleger III of Coventry:

Fred Zuleger III of Coventry, was elected president by the Board of the New England 65+ Runners Club on April 25 in Wakefield, MA. Other officers elected to serve with Zugeler are: Jerry Levasseur, Brunswick, ME; Dr. Ray Cormier, Methuen, MA; and Henry Woolstat, Brookline, MA.

Zuleger becomes the second Rhode Islander to be president. Florence Dagata of Pawtucket was president in 2000 - 2003.

The New England 65+ Runners Club has over 575 members, both men and women, in the six New England States. In addition to runners, it includes track & field and racewalkers. One must be 64 ½ years old to join.

Fred Zuleger brings to the office an impressive running background. At age 68 he has run ten Boston Marathons and thirty marathons in all. He’s run marathons in Dublin, Stockholm; Medoc (France); London; and Hamilton, New Zealand. The 1990 Berlin Marathon was the most impressive. “It was the year the wall came down,” Fred reports. “We ran into East Germany and there were 25,000 runners from all parts of the world. Then in 1994 I ran the original marathon route in Athens.”

Zuleger served as president of the Rhode Island Road Runners from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2005 to 2007. Since he retired from Citizens Bank, he has averaged 82 races per year.

Any runner, track & field competitor or racewalker can join the club by going to the NE65plus.org web site or call Fred Zuleger at 401.822.0116
