Special Olympics Rhode Island Torch Run set for June 1

Police, Firefighters, State Troopers, Correctional Officers and FBI officials from across Rhode Island will relay the Special Olympics Rhode Island Flame of Hope across the state on Friday, June 1st for the 2007 Special Olympics Rhode Island State Summer Games Opening Ceremonies. Opening Ceremonies for the Games are held at the University of Rhode Island’s Meade Stadium and will begin at 7:30pm.

The 2007 Torch Run for Special Olympics Rhode Island is a 120 mile, 5 leg torch relay that involves more than 500 police, firefighters, state troopers, correctional officers and FBI representing more than 40 agencies across Rhode Island. All 5 legs of the Torch Run will converge on URI’s Meade Stadium June 1st with the final leg of the relay arriving at Meade Stadium at 8:20pm. Torch Run participants will carry the Flame of Hope into Meade Stadium for the lighting of the cauldron to officially open the 2007 Special Olympics Rhode Island State Summer Games.

The Torch Run Committee hopes to raise over $150,000.00 for Special Olympics Rhode Island through special events, individual and corporate donations, Harley Davidson Raffle and T-shirt sales.

The Special Olympics Rhode Island State Summer Games will be held June 1, 2 & 3, 2007 at the University of Rhode Island and will include more than 1,500 athletes from across the state. Athletes will compete in aquatics, athletics, powerlifting, cycling, 10-pin bowling and unified soccer.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an international event to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics, which provides year-round sports training and competition for more than one million children and adults who have intellectual disabilities and/or a closely related developmental disability. More than 2,500 athletes participate year-round in Special Olympics Rhode Island.
