Westerly Track & Athletic Club is set to host its 15th annual Lil' Rhody Runaround, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. in Charlestown. For those who have never given this race a try, I've reprinted below an advance I wrote on the event a few years ago: Those interested in straying from the beaten path, so to speak, should check out the Lil' Rhody Runaround at Burlingame State Park in Charlestown. Although the event, which begins at the Prosser Beach picnic area, draws some of the top trail runners from the region, the flat and fast 8-miler serves as a nice introduction to trail running for first-timers, as well. Lil' Rhody's appeal, says WTAC member Nick Bottone Jr., is that "while the Yellow Dot Trail around Watchaug Pond does contain many natural obstacles, like fallen tree limbs, mud, rocks, wet leaves, etc., it is relatively flat - unlike many courses which are run on rugged, more hilly and even mountainous terrain. For this reason, it definitely appeals to the more experienced trail runners and even road racers and recreational runners who are looking for a change of pace from regular road or track races and workouts."
