Rhode Island was well represented at the Hershey Track & Field Games North American Finals, held over the weekend in Hershey, Pa. Competing against some of the top track and field athletes from throughout the U.S. and Canada, Erica Johnson, Ebonee Marrow, Dakota Dailey-Harris and Tyesha Forbes – all 11 and competing for the Providence Cobras - teamed up to place sixth in the 11-12 girls 4x100-meter relay with a time of 56.7. The girls had qualified for the nationals by running a state-record time of 57.67 at the Rhode Island state meet, held last month at Rhode Island College. After recording the second-fastest time in the region (1:09.1) en route to qualifying for the North American Finals, 11-year-old Meg Halworth of East Greenwich went on to place seventh in the girls 11-12 400-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 1:09.90. Open to boys and girls aged 9-14 with competition in a number of basic running, jumping and throwing (softball throw) events broken down into three age groups _ 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14, the Hershey Track and Field Games begin with local meets held each summer in cities and towns throughout the country. Champions from each of those local meets advance to the state finals. The top competitors from each region, as determined by their performances at those state meets, then receive an all expenses paid trip to the North American Final. To learn how to get involved in next year's meets, youngsters should contact their local parks and recreation department or Rhode Island state coordinator Matt LaFazia at the Johnston Recreation Department by phone at (401) 272-3460 or via e-mail at mattlafazia@hotmail.com.
