Bessette, McCarty Win Matty Siravo Memorial 5K

Fifty youngsters participated in Matty's Mighty Dash.


Although the weather did its best to deter them, more than 200 runners and walkers turned out for the Matty Siravo Memorial 5K Run/Walk for Epilepsy, last Saturday at the University of Rhode Island.

Scott Bessette, of Mystic, Conn., dodged the raindrops the fastest, clocking a winning time of 16:13. Jessica McCarty, of Saugus, Mass., was the top woman, finishing 13th overall in 20:27.

In addition, 50 youngsters participated in Matty's Mighty Dash, competing in seven heats with each child receiving a Matty's Mighty Dash t-shirt and medal at the finish line.

The 3.1-mile race held in memory of Matthew Siravo - a 5-year-old Wakefield boy who died from complications following a prolonged seizure on May 11, 2003 – has now raised more than $30,000 for the Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation which supports research, education and awareness of epilepsy, the third most common neurological disorder, affecting 2.3 million Americans.

``We have also raised funds from our annual Golf for Epilepsy, Snow Angel Ball dinner and auction and Matty Hatty Birthday Dance-a-thon annually,’’ said Matty’s father Richard, who appeared on the CBS Saturday Early Show with his wife Debra last month to discuss epilepsy and his son’s memorial foundation. ``Those funds have been used to build a handicap accessible playground in South Kingstown, provide an annual lectureship at Brown Medical School, support our education and awareness programs including the publishing of our book, "My Friend Matty", and to support other organizations which assist those living with epilepsy.’’
